Key Outcomes

  • One place to manage compatible devices
  • Cross-brand actions that work together
  • Fewer repetitive manual steps

The Challenge

Devices from multiple manufacturers often live in separate applications. The goal was to organize their control into a more coherent experience and coordinate their behavior across brand boundaries.

My Approach

  • Worked with Home Assistant and openHAB as unified interfaces for the connected home environment.
  • Integrated supported devices from different brands into home control and monitoring workflows.
  • Designed automations so compatible devices could respond to shared conditions or actions regardless of manufacturer.
  • Focused on simplifying day-to-day device control without claiming every brand or protocol is universally compatible.

Results & Impact

The smart-home environment became easier to operate by bringing supported devices from different manufacturers into unified interfaces. The real advantage was not just central control, but reducing repetitive actions across multiple apps through coordinated automation.

  • One place to manage compatible devices. Home Assistant and openHAB organized device controls and states into more usable dashboards, reducing the need to jump between individual manufacturer applications.
  • Cross-brand actions that work together. Automation rules allowed compatible devices from different ecosystems to react to common events or conditions, creating more coordinated routines.
  • Fewer repetitive manual steps. Everyday actions that previously required checking multiple apps or toggling several devices individually could be grouped into workflows, reducing unnecessary interaction.
  • More consistent household routines. Centralized automation helped make repeated actions predictable and easier to adjust as new supported devices were introduced.
  • A flexible platform for experimentation. A self-managed integration layer made it easier to test new automations and refine device behavior without rebuilding the entire control setup for every vendor.

The project showed how thoughtful integration can turn a fragmented smart-home setup into a more convenient day-to-day experience built around coordinated behavior instead of separate apps.
